A password-protected directory or area is a folder that could be accessed only when a username and a password are typed in, so no unauthorized people could view its content. This feature can be used for the main folder of a particular website or exclusively for a specific subfolder based upon your requirements. For example, if you are developing a new site and you do not want people to see it before it's ready, you should limit the access to it altogether, whereas if you want only some individuals to be able to access certain files, you can password-protect only a specific folder, while the remaining portion of the site could be seen by anybody. Anyway, a “403 Forbidden” error page shall appear if the login details the visitor types in are not right. Even a direct link to a file shall not work so long as any folder above it is password-protected.

Password Protected Directories in Website Hosting

Setting up a password-protected area shall take merely a few mouse clicks and a few seconds when you host your Internet sites within a website hosting account with our company. You will not need to do anything complicated - you'll have to select a domain/subdomain, to select which folder under it must be protected, and then to type in the login name and password that'll be used to access that folder. When a number of people need their own login credentials, there will not be a problem to make a number of different usernames with access to the exact same folder. All secured folders will appear with a padlock icon within the File Manager section, so you'll always know where this feature is active. If you wish to deactivate the security feature for any folder, you can disable it from the same section of the CP where you have enabled it.

Password Protected Directories in Semi-dedicated Hosting

If you have a semi-dedicated server account with us, you'll be able to secure any content that you have uploaded through our protection tool. Its interface is as simple and intuitive as that of the Hepsia Control Panel it's part of, so you will not have to type in any code at any time. You'll simply have to choose one of the domains/subdomains you have in the web hosting account and to determine which folder should be password-protected - the website’s root folder or some folder below it. Then you can enter the username and the password, which will be stored in encrypted form in our system, and you will be ready. The protection shall be activated immediately, so anyone who tries to access the recently protected folder shall have to type in the accurate login details. In case several people should be able to access exactly the same content, you can create a separate username for each of them.
